For Paris Fashion Week in spring and summer 2025, Chanel returned to the Grand Palais, whose main entrance is named after the fashion house's founder. The brand and the venue have a long history: since 2005, Chanel has held several of its fashion shows here, and the Grand Palais also enjoys Chanel's patronage.

This year's fashion show was built around one central element: an open birdcage, reminiscent of Jean-Paul Goode's famous short film L'Oiseau de paradis (or L'Esprit de Chanel), in which Vanessa Paradis plays Coco Chanel's canary for the legendary Coco perfume. Vanessa Paradis, who has since become Chanel's muse, was also present in the front row of the show and wore a floral silhouette.

Although left without a creative director following the departure of Virginie Viard last June, Chanel has once again taken off with a collection designed by the brand's creative department (which also developed the previous haute couture collection presented last June at the Opéra Garnier). Movement is the main element of this collection. The Chanel woman hovers in 76 light and airy silhouettes: "The collection is in the service of an idea and to this end pays tribute to women who, like Gabrielle Chanel, have freed themselves from society's idea of them," the review notes say.

They are the women pilots who paved the way for the others, represented here with aviator jackets, immaculate suits, uniforms and dresses. They are also the women of the Roaring Twenties, who contributed more than ever to the emancipation of women in the last century, and of whom Gabrielle Chanel was a part. In doing so, Chanel is making a statement to all those who helped change society and who continue to shape its history and collections, as well as its longtime muses, such as models Natasha Polley and Mariacarla Boscono.

An integral part of the fashion house's history (and a contribution to women's liberation), the little black dress is presented for the occasion as voluptuous, in a play on transparencies or neocrinolines. The tweed takes on pastel shades, while the chiffon capes add a new dimension to the silhouette in minimalist versions sublimated by coloured feathers.

Birds feature in this collection in a variety of ways: silhouettes are highlighted by silver feather belts, while long dresses and flowing capes are dressed in colourful feathers. As if in a ballet marked by a wide colour palette reminiscent of Chanel codes and the softness of the summer season, the models flew down the aisle of the Grand Palais. The highlight of the show was the performance of Riley Keough, friend of the fashion house and daughter of Lisa Marie Presley, who presented her rendition of Prince's When Doves Cry. In doing so, the fashion house gave us a timeless moment to celebrate this historic meeting.
