La Marinière - the symbol of the French wardrobe

Yes, Captain! In 2024, the fashion world began to imagine silhouettes dressed in true nautical style: the obligatory beret replaced the bob, the sailor collar was more fashionable than ever, and the sweater was adorned with stripes, marking the big comeback of the sailor hat.
With its horizontal blue and white stripes and boat neckline, the sneaker has become one of the most iconic wardrobe items over the years. First introduced in 1858, when it was declared the official dress of the French navy by decree, this striped knit quickly took the fashion world by storm, who had fun revisiting and adjusting it again and again. At the top of the list was Coco Chanel. The French designer decided to feminize it in the '10s, before high-profile celebrities in the '60s reappropriated it, like Brigitte Bardot in the film Bride Is Too Beautiful. Now an integral part of women's wardrobes, the sneaker has become the quintessence of French fashion.

Givenchy  2024

If the catwalks of the recent fashion weeks are anything to go by, nautical fashion is leaving the seaside and moving to the city. At Chanel, Virginie Viard revisits the sailor jacket for spring 2024, giving it a couture twist. The blue and white stripes are typical of La Marinière, as well as the knitwear in Givenchy's fall 2024 collection.

Dior  2024

Jonathan Anderson's passion for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary is well known, and his collections are dedicated to perfection and the unexpected. Such was the case with his Loewe show for autumn-winter 2024-2025. In it, the sailor suit was used in the form of a dress with a stiff effect and graphic armrests. For his part, Dior had fun by transforming the piece into a fluid, sheer ensemble.

Valentino resort 2025

The wearing of the marinière, besides being a strong symbol of French superiority and savoir-faire, but also of the return of the navy trend, speaks volumes about society's need for escape, especially in these difficult and uncertain times.

The best of marinière to wear in 2024.
