Loewe's 'Puzzle' bag is a favourite with fans of clean style

Created almost a decade ago by designer Jonathan Anderson, it was his first bag for fashion house Loewe. It quickly won the hearts of fashion connoisseurs who didn't need gaudy emblems, but relied on the design itself to express their style. Like Maison Margiela's iconic Tabi shoes, the Puzzle is establishing itself as an it-bag - a must-have wardrobe accessory. Its characteristic cube-shape and intricate origami structure make it unique and easily recognisable, without resembling traditional suitcase bags.

Few people know that Loewe has been involved in leather goods since its inception in 1846. The brand has always combined craftsmanship with innovation, but over the years this has been somewhat forgotten. In fact, before the advent of the 'Puzzle', the last new Loewe handbag was created back in the 1980s.So when Jonathan Anderson took over the fashion house, he was faced with the task of creating something truly unique - a bag that respected tradition but also catered to modern tastes. Thus the "Puzzle" was born - a bag with an innovative origami-inspired structure that is both stylish and functional. Thanks to its geometric design, even its mini version is surprisingly roomy. Its foldable shape makes it convenient to carry and store, and its intricate craftsmanship is a testament to Loewe's craftsmanship.

Loewe's 2025 Puzzle bag is actually different from the 2015 one.

Each Puzzle is handmade in Madrid from 75 individual pieces of leather and takes nine hours (and more than 500 separate actions, including precision cutting, hand stitching and dyeing) to complete. It's Anderson's homage to Loewe's heritage. But the original 2015 model is not exactly the same as the one we now find in stores or commercially. The fashion house literally redesigned the product to make it lighter, while keeping the geometry as an aesthetic cue. And, this, significantly increased the value of the Puzzle bag from before 2023 (the year of the aforementioned change).

Borsa Puzzle - 2023

Loewe's first Puzzle bag features leather flaps cut into sections and sewn alternately over another layer of leather, tone-on-tone, highlighting the handcrafted profiles. In the evolution, i.e. the bags made from 2023 to today, the base of the structure is lost and the flaps are sewn together: the design is retained but there is no 3D effect. We like to call it the "lightweight" version of the first design.

What does this involve? The new modelling resulted in a completely different end effect: while the first model was soft and adaptable to use, the second is more compact and structured, losing the typical origami characteristic of folds.
