Taschen "Hokusai" - product description "Hokusai" from Taschen is an inspiring introduction to the life and work of Katsushika Hokusai 1760–1849 —the undisputed giant of Japanese art and a legend of the Edo period. This brilliant painter and printmaker of the ukiyo-e "pictures of the floating world" movement revolutionized the perception of space, becoming one of the founding fathers of Western modernism. His works, full of precise lines and innovative color, captivated masters such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Edgar Degas, initiating a wave of Japonisme in Europe. This 96-page monograph traces the artist's incredibly rich portfolio: from famous landscapes and scenes from actors' lives, through illustrations for historical novels, to intimate surimono prints. The centerpiece of the publication is an analysis of his most famous series, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," including the iconic "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," which remains one of the most recognizable paintings in the world.
